Best Tips to Make the Most of Plastic Food Containers

Your collection of food containers is perhaps what makes those leftover dinners on tiring weekdays a fortunate reality. Now, no matter how handy they seem, they might look worn out due to daily use. To keep plastic food containers spick and span, please keep in mind the rules below.

Protect from Dishwasher

The experts providing the best quality food containers in South Africa said you must check out the labels. Only toss those containers in with the dinner plates if the manufacturers assure they are 'dishwasher-safe.' Not all food containers can handle heat or pressure. There is a high chance that the lids would not seal properly after cleaning inside the dishwasher.

Don’t Use it for Microwave

Microwaves can damage containers that are not deemed 'microwave-safe.' The plastic containers will likely degrade in quality or become pitted from being used to heat marinara sauce or any dish with excess fat. The best way out would be to transfer meals to a plate before heating or investing in glass containers – watch out for the plastic lids, though.

Go for the Top Rack If the Containers are Dishwasher Safe

Make sure the containers are secure on the top rack before loading. If the plastic containers fall to the bottom, they could be exposed to heat and melt.

Use Baking Soda to Zap the Stinking Odors

Freshen up the smelly food containers with baking soda – an abrasive yet gentle deodorizer. Wipe the surfaces with a damp sponge and then sprinkle lots of baking soda. Let it sit for a few minutes, and wash it in plain water.

Do the containers stink even after you have used enough baking soda? Stuff the container with crushed newspaper and put the lid back. Let it sit that way for a day. The paper will absorb all the odors. Wash the containers with soapy water before storing food.

Blasting Cooking Spray to Get Rid of Stains

Did last night's meatballs and spaghetti turn your food container into a disgusting orange color? Spraying a thin coat of cooking spray on the insides of the containers creates a layer between the plastic and the food. This keeps the containers free of stains even when you decide to store transferrable foods such as tomato sauce.

Are the containers already stained because you did not know that cooking spray trick before? Mix one spoon of chlorine bleach in a cup of lukewarm water and pour this into the containers directly.

The solution must cover the entire discoloured plastic. Soak for half an hour, and then wash the container with soapy water. Since you have used bleach, please rinse thoroughly again and again.

The experts providing kitchen accessories and drawer dividers in South Africa said plastic food containers are not meant to last for an eternity. Once they fail to function properly (read – the bottom is warped or the lid is not staying put) or once they are stained excessively, please get some new ones.
